When visiting the Mountain Gorillas in Virunga NP, the Eastern Lowland Gorillas out of Bukavu in Kahuzi Biega, we propose also a visit of the island of Idjwi.

An island never touched by the brutal civil wars and mass killings. An island with a peaceful, hard working population. An island worth visiting.

Try the Kasgsi – a local banana liquor, Sambaza – small fried fishes and a fresh Pineapple at the end. Go in the canoe with the fishermen and find out how they catch the Sambaza.

It’s a mountainous island with 36 small islands in its surrounding and beautiful views on the Lake once driving or walking around

There is still a small endemic population of Blue Monkeys ( Cercopithesus mitis schoutedeni )

Due habitat loss they are still in danger but the Mwami ( King ) ordered in 2015 to stop cutting the forest and is now replanting trees to enlarge their territory.

Visiting them will encourage the local villagers to respect the King’s orders and help him in his conservation politics.
